Edgewood Church desires to be a church that serves our community, promoting the reconciliation of people to each other and people to God. The work began in 2009, long before the church launched, by finding ways to serve and bless the community. With the help of partners, our projects began with work at Whitefoord Elementary School, supplying almost three hundred children with school supplies for the year, providing a large quantity of hand sanitizers to contain a flu outbreak, and providing breakfast and care packages for their faculty and staff.

In October 2010, Edgewood Church officially launched with weekly services at Coan Middle School and has quickly seen much fruit. In January, we held our first baptism service, baptizing ten people.

As with any church plant, there are some challenges. We have encountered many people in the area who see church as irrelevant and unimportant. The Edgewood community is a racially and economically diverse area. A high percentage of singles can be found in this community, particularly single moms. In a community that is not particularly prosperous, creating a sustainable model is also a challenge.

Edgewood Church seeks to continue engaging our community through events such as hosting community block parties, passing out coffee on cold mornings, and any other way we can reflect the love of God in our community. We hope to become a church that is starting other churches. As we engage this fractured community in meaningful ways, we hope to see a breakdown of economic and racial divisions as lives are changed through the power of the gospel, and then to see that happen in other communities.

Nathan and Carrie Dean

Nathan Dean earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from North Georgia College and State University and a Master of Divinity degree from McAfee School of Theology. Carrie Dean graduated from the University of Georgia with a major in Psychology and a minor in Portuguese, and later earned a Master of Divinity degree from McAfee School of Theology.

As part of an Urban Missions class at McAfee, Nathan and Carrie took a tour of different ministries in the city of Atlanta and were moved by the growing population versus the number of churches that had closed or were on their way to being closed. They couldn’t help but notice the great need for a healthy, vibrant, relevant church in the city of Atlanta.

As their seminary days came to a close, the Deans began praying about what God wanted them to do next and soon knew that God was calling them to plant a church in Atlanta.

The Deans began with demographic research, looking for an area that aligned with their passions—economically and ethnically diverse with a need for racial reconciliation. They were then able to narrow their search down to two or three communities and next sought to find out where God was already at work. They met with community leaders in these areas, and through these meetings, clearly sensed God at work in Edgewood.

Nathan and Carrie are the proud parents of Oliver Finn, born January 15, 2010
